Recorded in performance on October 5, 1996 at the Royal Festival Hall in London, this Don Giovanni is among the very last of Sir Georg Solti's recordings.


This is an old school, big-boned Don Giovanni. Solti conducts the LPO stately and fluently and the vocal might of such performers as Terfel and Fleming makes this a strong account, albeit slightly anacronistic when compared to


Gardiner, Jacobs, Östman and Norrington.


With a bass-baritone Giovanni and a mezzo Elvira and Zerlina, this is heavyweight Mozart, like that of Böhm and Karajan, but never boring. The comprimarios are also very strongly cast and the audience noise is at a minimum.
