Bij opgravingen in Noord-Irak vindt priester-archeoloog Merrin een duivelsbeeldje. Net op hetzelfde moment wordt in Georgetown actrice Chris McNeil opgeschrikt door vreemde geluiden in de kamer van haar twaalfjarig dochtertje Regan.
