Roberto Stanley is succesvol in haar werk, maar niet in de liefde  Ze brengt heel veel tijd door met haar moeder Inez, waardoor ze geen tijd overheeft voor relaties  Sinds Roberta's vader haar moeder heeft verlaten, heeft die zich volledig afhankelijk opgesteld van haar dochter  Aan de andere kant is Inez ook een rots in de branding voor haar. Maar wat Roberta zich niet realiseert, is dat haar moeder psychische problemen heeft en haar volledig wil claimen. Als Roberta haar aantrekkelijke collega Larry ontmoet en hij de ware voor haar blijkt te zijn, stelt Inez alles in het werk om de twee uit elkaar te drijven
