Balto is een zwervershond die niet bepaald geliefd is. Hij steelt z'n eten en zwerft over de straten. Hij heeft een oogje op Jenna, een vrouwtjeshond waarvan het bazinnetje ernstig ziek is geworden door een ziekteversprijding. Het medicijn moet vervoerd worden vanaf Nenana, een stad ver van Nome. Balto wil degene zijn om het medicijn te halen en zo het hart van Jenna winnen.
