Golden Gate Quartet - The Spirituals and Gospel CD1

Release date: 3 November 2003

Bitrate: 256 kbps

"Pioneer Virginia gospel/pop quartet of the '30s and '40s. Calling their innovative approach to sacred hymns "jubilee" singing, The Golden Gate Quartet, propelled by Willie Johnson and William Langford, enjoyed massive acceptance far outside the church. Their smooth Mills Brothers-influenced harmonies made The Gates naturals for pop crossover success, and they began recording for Victor in 1937. National radio broadcasts and an appearance on John Hammond's 1938 "Spirituals to Swing" concert at Carnegie Hall made them coast-to-coast favorites. By 1941 The Gates were recording for Columbia minus Langford, and movie appearances were frequent: Star Spangled Rhythm, Hollywood Canteen, and Hit Parade of 1943, to name a few. Some experiments with R&B material didn't pan out during the late '40s, and Johnson defected to The Jubilaires in 1948. The group emigrated to France in 1959; led by veteran bass singer Orlando Wilson."

Well, I'm not an expert in gospel music or the Golden Gate Quartet. But this is great music. A few years ago I pirated a copy of "Swing Down, Chariot" on Napster, and I loved it. I could only find a few more songs by these guys there, but I liked them all. For several years they stayed in the back of my mind while I was buying rock, rap, country and folk cds, but finally I couldn't resist anymore and I bought this cd.

The music is fun, and the singers are incredibly talented. This had to be some of the most entertaining music of the 1940s; I wish I could go back then to sit next to a radio and hear how it sounded when they were pioneers.

Hey, if you're not into old music, you might enjoy this anyway. Especially if you enjoy Moby, you can hear their influence on him.

Of course there are a lot of other Golden Gate albums and collections available, but if you can't make up your mind, you can get this one with confidence. It has a great selection of music, all of their biggest hits, from throughout their career. The sound quality is excellent. If there is any problem, it is that the "20 page booklet" with "rare photos" has about a sentence on each page, and maybe six photos. Yes, the booklet is disappointing, but the music is great. ~ Wyote
