Fratello del cinico Ivan e dello spirituale Alioscia, Dimitri Karamazov viene accusato dell\'omicidio del vecchio padre, dal quale lo separavano motivi di interesse e ragioni sentimentali. In realtà, il delitto è stato commesso da Smerdiakov, fratello illegittimo di Dimitri, che l\'ha commesso, però, su implicita istigazione di Ivan. Al processo, costui confessa la propria colpa, commessa per compromettere Dimitri e poter così sposare la sua fidanzata, Caterina Petrovna, che il fratello aveva abbandonato, perché follemente innamorato di una libertina, Gruscenka. Innocente, Dimitri dovrebbe venire liberato: ma una sua lettera a Caterina Petrovna, presentata in tribunale, sembra confermare, malgrado la confessione di Ivan, la sua colpevolezza. Egli finisce così in Siberia, dove lo segue Gruscenka.
