Batman är i grunden en vanlig människa utan superkrafter, miljardären Bruce Wayne, som efter att hans föräldrar mördats av en rånare beslutar sig för att ägna sitt liv åt att bekämpa brottsligheten i Gotham City. Den unge Bruce svär på sina föräldrars grav att hämnas deras död och bekämpa brott. Efter många års hård mental och fysisk träning runt om i världen återvänder Bruce Wayne till sin hemstad Gotham City och maskerar sig som en mänsklig fladdermus ? Batman. Under sitt lyxiga palats, Wayne Manor, en bit utanför Gotham inreder han en grotta, Batcave, som får tjäna som hemlig bas för hans brottsbekämpning. Som sin högra hand har Bruce betjänten Alfred Pennyworth, som tjänat familjen Wayne sedan innan Bruce var född. Efter en tid tar han även en föräldralös pojke under sina vingar och gör honom till sin medhjälpare under namnet Robin ("Rödhaken").
