Torrent description

The music of the Doors and the music of pianist George Winston would seem to exist in two separate universes. It turns out, though, that the legendary rock band was among the seminal influences of Winston’s early days as a burgeoning player. His first instrument back in the 60s was an electric organ, and the prime sound of the Doors was, of course, generated by Ray Manzarek’s reedy organ. Now, Winston returns to the music of Jim Morrison and company with a surprisingly effective recital of Doors material. Adapting the songs for solo piano, Winston distills their mysterious essence while adding his own lyrical feel. The result is a creative and enjoyable rethinking of classic rock fodder. Winston wisely touches upon both hits and more obscure songs including “Summer’s Almost Gone,” “I Can’t See Your Face in My Mind,” and “My Wild Love.” Against all odds, he makes everything work in one of the most surprising “collaborations” of the year.
