Finland's Firebox Records continue to release consistently good albums at a surprising rate for such a young label, and this latest one, Swallow the Sun's debut _The Morning Never Came_, is possibly the best so far. Swallow the Sun can be summed up thus: Finnish melodic doom/death with vast growls and occasional clean vocals, well placed keyboard enhancements, and enough variety and dynamics to ward off any form of boredom. Their melodies can just as easily evoke My Dying Bride or Amorphis circa _Tales From the Thousand Lakes_ as they can bring Rapture to mind, which helps ensure that the music flows nicely throughout. _The Morning Never Came_ is an uncomplicated album -- not in the sense that it is simplistic or dull, but rather because it remains unpretentious and accomplished throughout. The songwriting is good; the riffs range from doomy to energetic with apparent ease; the melodies mostly vary between good and excellent; the playing is tight and the production top notch. _The Morning Never Came_ does owe some ideas to the aforementioned bands, but even in terms of originality, the end result is acceptable. Not every single passage in the album is remarkable, and some bits could have been trimmed, but Swallow the Sun manage to remain sufficiently consistent throughout the record to come out with a very impressive debut. Rarely is a doom-tinged album as downright enjoyable as _The Morning Never Came_ whilst keeping so much of its atmospheric quality, and the fact that this is only Swallow the Sun's first effort makes the future seem even brighter for them. _Ghosts of Loss_ is the follow-up to these Finns' very well received debut _The Morning Never Came_, and sees Swallow the Sun having to deal with the added responsibility of living up to considerable expectations. In order to gauge the level of anticipation for this album, suffice to say that _Forgive Her..._, the single that preceded the full-length _Ghosts of Loss_, entered the Finnish singles chart in fourth position. Their label, Firebox, claim it is the first time a doom metal release ever entered their national charts, and I am quite inclined to believe them -- and doom metal this is, not the watered down rock version that countrymates such as Sentenced are famous for. But neither is this part of the more extreme funeral doom movement that Finland is well known for; to be more precise, Swallow the Sun play a form of melodic, sometimes bombastic doom/death metal.
While their music is quite guitar based, keyboards play a prominent role as well, adding an extra layer of atmosphere rather than leading the music, and leaving the focus on heavy guitars and thick growls alternating with occasional clean vocals. Throughout the album, the lengthy song structures help provide variety and character, with the mood clearly rooted in doom metal despite the melodic arrangements. With no great changes in style apparent, it follows that the measure of this album's success lies in the band's ability to make a better record using a very similar recipe -- and the likes of "Through Her Silvery Body" and "Hold This Woe" from their debut are not exactly easy to eclipse. On the other hand, in my opinion they didn't necessarily have to surpass the very best tracks from their debut; I would have already been pleased if they could match them for a greater part of the album.
It shouldn't take you more than a few minutes of opener "Giant" to realize that StS have at least tried hard to create a worthy successor to their highly promising debut. Sorrowful, tranquil sections intermingle with crushing, bombastic parts to leave one thing perfectly clear: rather than throwing a number of potentially disruptive new elements into the mix, Swallow the Sun have looked to perfect their proven sound. "Fragile" is where StS have their finest moment on _Ghosts of Loss_, with a large number of other very accomplished passages ensuring the album remains very consistent. I would go as far as to say it is a more consistent album than its predecessor, as it should be, but I would have liked to find more of the truly outstanding moments they have already proven themselves well capable of creating. Swallow the Sun nevertheless show they are a more experienced band now, able to put together track after track of high quality doom metal. _Ghosts of Loss_ is one of the highlights of the year in its genre; yet I still think they can do even better in the future. You open your eyes and look at your surroundings. You stand in the middle of an ancient graveyard, the tombstones partly cracked and fallen, a mausoleum standing in the center, overgrown by vines, its heavy stone door slightly ajar. A creepy fog is wafting around the graves and the heavy set brick structure in front of you. The pale light of a full moon gloomily shines through the cotton ball-like clouds, giving the scenery a ghastly look.
This could happen to you while listening to the deceivingly positively titled new SWALLOW THE SUN album "Hope". Just like their previous two Doom/Death masterpieces, the Finns are treading familiar terrain with their latest offering of melancholy, but without just rehashing what they had done before. All the ingredients these six Finns had used in the past are still there, but they still manage to progress within their particular sound, which is characterized by the following: a very warm and full sound, elegiac melodies, intense atmosphere, very deep Death Metal vocals and also a good clear voice and of course never-ending slowness.
Opener "Hope" starts very warm and full sounding, with clear guitar and a soft clear voice, before SWALLOW THE SUN take away any glimmer of hope with their epic, heavy and atmospheric Doom Metal with a grave-like voice, sending us into the depths of despair, while "The Hours Of Despair" right after surprises with a heavy and also pretty fast beginning, just to intensify the doomy feeling after that, with a great atmosphere and brilliantly intertwined clear and harsh vocals, kicking off another wave of classic, brilliant Doom/Death Metal that will suck you in whole with "The Justice Of Suffering" and "Don't Fall Asleep (Horror Pt. 2)".
Then, though, we see a little drop off for the second half of the album, still providing us with solid, good Doom/Death, but somehow with a little less of a spark of genius than the first truly inspired cuts on the album, which is a bit sad, as one naturally would hope for a bit more after such a strong beginning, yet it is still not enough to really drag the album down much, as the quality still is far above average.
My promo also contains a bonus track, which is the second song of the single "Don't Fall Asleep", and would have been great on the regular album as well, but like this makes the single an almost essential buy for fans of the band, as "These Low Lands" is a cover version of the song "Alavilla Mailla" von TIMO RAUTIAINEN & TRIO NISKALAUKAUS, which has been greatly implemented into the SWALLOW THE SUN sound, a true elegy with dreamy melodies, inspired leads and a great use of alternating clear and growled vocals, a brilliant track!
Overall "Hope" is one of the first reference points for the Doom genre in the new year, surely this sound has been done before by other bands, but the conviction and compelling nature of the compositions that will grab your soul and twist it dry that makes SWALLOW THE SUN such an outstanding band, so Doomheads, you know what to get in February!
