Torrent description

Tarquinio Merula's music is so awesomely beautiful and sweet! This must be one of the most beautiful recordings of that type of early Italian baroque music. Sometimes, listening to that style of music can get a bit monotonous after a while, but not in this case. There is always new tension and liveliness in every single piece, and each piece manages to catch your attention, either because of its rhythm, or the sound of an instrument, its cunning compositional technique, or its expression. I like track 9 (a Ruggiero) especially. Track 16 suddenly has a lovely harp playing along to great effect.

There are fugato parts, dances and a lot of those captivating, a bit ecstatic, basso ostinato pieces (not just in that one chaconne, track 3). The rhythmical and dance element is strong throughout, making the music always sound fresh, but there is also very emotional and melodious violin playing. The ensemble makes the best use of the timbres of each instrument and of the meaning or the "affect" of each piece. I don't think this sort of music can still be better interpreted than on this recording by the L'Aura Soave ensemble.
