O filme conta a história do ponto de vista de Mary Bradford (Mischa Barton), uma menina tímida e quieta que é levada para um colégio interno, formado apenas por garotas, por seu pai, após a morte de sua mãe e a pedido de sua madrasta. Logo chegando em seu novo lar, Mary é apresentada às suas duas colegas de quarto, Tori Moller (Jéssica Pare) e Paulie Oster (Piper Perabo). Ao passo em que Mary vai tentando se adaptar ao local e arrumar suas coisas, ela logo descobre que Tori e Paulie são, na verdade, amantes. Quando Tori se vê sobre uma pressão enorme, incluindo por parte de sua pequena irmã, que estudava no mesmo local, ela decide terminar seu relacionamento com Paulie.
