Radioaktive Strahlung erweckt den seit Jahrmillionen schlafenden Riesensaurier Godzilla wieder zum Leben. Der ist darob ziemlich erbost und trampelt erst mal ausgiebig einige japanische Städte platt, ehe ein Wissenschaftler mit einer neuentwickelten Waffe den Riesen zur Strecke bringt. Die Waffe ist jedoch so schrecklich, daß er im Anschluß daran Selbstmord begeht, um die Welt davor zu bewahren.
