---------------------------------------------

Five years after scoring with the mega hit "One of Us" and becoming the topic of more than a few religious conservatives' tirades, Joan Osborne returns with Righteous Love, sporting a more polished feel than on her debut, Relish. Producer Mitchell Froom brings along a few of his Los Lobos/Latin Playboys pals (Steve Berlin, Louie Perez) and adds some taut muscle to Osborne's songs, but at times comes close to overshadowing her work. Mitchell ropes in the loud blues and soul leanings that made her previous album so much fun, and the singer herself emotes in a much more restrained pop vein. An awkward cover of Gary Wright's "Love Is Alive" seems like a bit of a misstep, but Osborne manages to squeeze the last remaining bits of emotion out of Bob Dylan's " To Make You Feel My Love," a tune that even Billy Joel or Garth Brooks' adult-contemporary stabs couldn't ruin. Her reading is by far the best of the three. Don't expect a blockbuster hit on the level of "One of Us," but Righteous Love, for all its woes, holds enough treasures of its own.

---------------

Righteous Love, unlike its 1995 breakthrough predecessor, Relish, is more profane than sacred. In fact, Osborne gets rather bawdy on "Baby Love," which details the pain and perils of involvement with a considerably younger man, and on the gender-bending "If I Was Your Man." The invigorated Kentuckian does seem to be describing love of the celestial kind on the title cut. And, like the Beatles before her, Osborne makes a detour to Mother India; raga elements spice up "Running Out of Time," the aforementioned "If I Was Your Man," and the outstandingly alliterative "Grand Illusion." The Osborne of Righteous Love is a graceful chameleon capable of conjuring the specters of Laura Nyro, Carole King, and Bonnie Raitt at their edgiest. She throws in a dash of gospel in "Angel Face," only to become a plaintive victim of love in Bob Dylan's "Make You Feel My Love." But throughout, she proves that she's a survivor, borne up on wings of her own construction, singing fierce tales of renewal, empowerment, and endurance.

-----------------

RIGHTEOUS LOVE makes good on the promise of her major labeldebut RELISH that Joan Osborne may be the premiere alt R&B chanteuse of her generation. She returns here with equal force, marrying rock, soul, folk, and even elements of dance and world music in incisive, heartfelt songs about love and life. The record is powered by Osborne's passionate singing voice (as capable of subtle nuance as it is of scratchy-throated wailing) and her ability to bring the intensity of roots music into a contemporary context.
Fiery Southern gospel (Osborne's Kentucky roots are still close to the surface) informs several of the tunes, such as the bluesy, breezy "Angel Face" and the hard-rocking title track. On the groove-centred, disco-inflected "Safety in Numbers" and the sassy "My Love Is Alive" syncopated dance rhythms predominate, but Osborne pulls surprises from her stylistic bag of tricks throughout, including slinky Middle Eastern motifs ("If I Was Your Man") and moody, idiosyncratic pop ("Baby Love"). Crack musicians and slick production give Osborne's gutsy aesthetic hodge-podge a well-polished surface, making RIGHTEOUS LOVE another winner.
