This is the first of 3 SNL shows hosted by Eric Idle, not long after he came to the U.S.  about 2 years after the Monty Python's Flying Circus series ended and after "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" was made.





Richard Belzer makes fun of a still-hospitalized Chevy Chase and Weekend Update in the cold opening.


John Belushi again imitates Joe Cocker, but this time alongside the real Cocker when Joe sings one of his songs with a New York-based group which he assembled in Jamaica called Stuff.





Eric actually made three appearances that season, including SNL's only live show done on a different night (Sunday) in prime time when NBC's BIG EVENT presented Saturday Night at the Mardi Gras in New Orleans in February 1977.  His third time hosting, however, was in 1979.





Aside from Graham Chapman having a cameo in a later show (which I also have) in the early 1980s, the next  time a Python comedian hosted SNL was Michael Palin -- first in 1979 by himself and then in 1982 when he co-hosted with his mother!!
