The compositions chosen for the recording, "Alma Brasileira" display the very intent and essence of classical guitar. Each performance is full-bodied, and so complete, the listener never questions what the compositions would sound like with additional instrumentation. It is commendable that neither performer 'overplays' in an effort to be distinguished -- permitting the compositions to be foremost in the listener's mind. If you have more modern musical tastes, you might enjoy the very brief opening selection, "Cantiaga de Cego," composed by Marlos Nobre which is explosively percussive. If you're more inclined towards lyricism, you will enjoy all of selections penned by Sergio Assad, particulary the two from, "Suite Brasileira." The majestic compositions of Villa-Lobos and other composers, (Gismonti, Tiso, Pascoal and Gnattali), lie more towards center. Having enjoyed hearing Gismonti perform his composition, "Frevo" on the piano, I am impressed with the blisteringly feverish, tempo at which the Assads choose to execute it. Depending on your melodic tastes, you will enjoy most of the compositions recorded on "Alma Brasileira -- those you may not truly enjoy, you can at least appreciate hearing them being performed brilliantly by two of the most gifted guitarists to ever be recorded.
