FBI Agent Nick Halton (James Russo) ist seit Jahren wie ein Besessener auf der Spur des Verbrechers Jeremy Barrett (Mel Harris); - endlich geliingt es ihm, Barrett in Los Angeles in eine Falle zu locken und festzunehmen. Auf seiner Überführung nach New York gelingt es dem Gefangenen sich zu befreien, und mit drei weiteren Häftlingen das Kommando über den Linienflug zu übernehmen. Dabei wird die Außenhaut der Boing 747 schwer beschädigt. Barrett droht, das Flugzeug auf dichtbevölkertem Gebiet abstürzen zu lassen, wenn im das FBI nicht die Flucht nach Mexiko ermöglicht. Nick Halton sieht nur eine Chance: Er muß sich in das Flugzeug abseilen lassen ...
