In the lunar calendar, shivarathri is the day before the amavasya or new moon of every month. On this day the planetary positions are such that there is a natural upsurge of energies in the human system in the northern hemisphere of the planet. Therfore, it is very beneficial to keep one's spine in a vertical position. It is for this reason that in the tradition one is advised not to sleep throughout the night. The Shivarathri during the month of Magha (Feb-March) is particularly powerful among the twelve Shivarathris of the year and is known as Mahashivarathri. In the yogic tradition, Shiva is considered not as a God but as the Adi Guru - the first Guru, and this night is specially chosen to celebrate the Grace of the Guru. This night is also beneficial for specific and intense sadhana (spiritual practices). Each year, at Isha Yoga Centre, Mahashivarathri is celebrated with great exuberance and spiritual intensity. Hundreds of thousands of people gather from all parts of the world on this night. Sadhguru spends the entire night with the gathering and offers many powerful meditative possibilities to all.
