De veertienjarige Alyssa woont sinds de dood van haar moeder een jaar geleden bij haar oma Lucy. Het was voor beiden een moeilijk jaar, en Lucy besluit dat Alyssa maar bij haar vader moet gaan wonen op de Bahamas. Voor haar vader, die een onderzoekcentrum voor dolfijnen heeft, komt het bezoek van zijn dochter erg ongelegen, omdat hij het erg druk heeft met politici en andere "experts" die van het reservaat een toeristische attractie willen maken. Al snel went Alyssa aan het eilandleven en ontwikkelt dezelfde gave als haar vader: communiceren met dolfijnen.
