La sparatoria all'OK Corral e' l'evento simbolo dell'epopea del West. Trenta secondi di fuoco che hanno fatto dello sceriffo Wyatt Earp un eroe. Ma fu davvero un eroe?
La sparatoria all'O.K. Corral fu un evento di leggendarie proporzioni che ha segnato la storia del Far West ed ha ispirato numerosi film western.
L'evento ebbe luogo il 26 ottobre 1881, verso le 14.30, in un lotto di terra vacante, noto come "lotto 2", nel 17° blocco, dietro il corral (ricovero per cavalli) a Tombstone, in Arizona.
In trenta secondi vennero sparati trenta colpi di pistola. Wyatt Earp, Morgan Earp, Virgil Earp e Doc Holliday duellarono contro Billy Claiborne, Frank McLaury, Tom McLaury, Billy Clanton ed Ike Clanton. I due McLaury vennero uccisi, così come Billy Clanton.
Sebbene nella sparatoria ci fosse un numero relativamente basso di vittime (tre morti), essa divenne molto più famosa di altre sparatorie dove le vittime furono molto più numerosi, tra queste occorre ricordare la sparatoria dei Quattro Morti in Cinque Secondi, che coinvolse lo sceriffo di El Paso e il pistolero Dallas Stoudenmire o la sparatoria di Hide Park.
Hollywood ha riproposto sul grande schermo l'epica sparatoria in ben sedici pellicole:
Il primo film fu Sfida infernale, del 1946, diretto da uno dei maestri del cinema western, John Ford, con Henry Fonda.
Nel 1957 è la volta di Sfida all'O.K. Corral, diretto da John Sturges, con Burt Lancaster e Kirk Douglas.
Nel 1971 esce invece Doc diretto da Frank Perry.
Più recentemente, il duello ci è stato riproposto nel 1993 da Tombstone, con Kurt Russel, e l'anno seguente, nel 1994, da Wyatt Earp, con Kevin Costner.
