The Captain Waverly Underhill Mysteries

"Captain Waverly Underhill...yes, I know him quite well. A retired gentleman, widower, former police captain. He lives alone in a bungalow in Dunwiddie Village, just outside Hyannisport. You've seen him, perhaps...tall, white-haired, with drooping eyebrows, wearing a bow tie and blazer, strolling along Main Street...or sometimes in Bermuda shorts and sandals with his knobby knees showing, walking along the beach at low tide, lost in thought, occasionally bending over to examine a seashell."

This is our introduction to Captain Underhill, the retired policeman who still finds himself, more often than not, solving crimes and chasing down killers and thieves. With the assistance of his good friend and beleagured physician, Doctor Alexander Scofield, Captain Underhill uses his keen mind to solve the case with a style all his own.

The Legacy of Euriah Pillar
Captain Underhill, the retired Cape Cod police captain, has a unique ability. By merely reading the newspaper--  and reading between the lines--  he is often able to solve cases the working police cannot. Case in point: the strange legacy of Euriah Pillar, an eccentric millionaire who leaves behind a bizarre will, the terms of which set in motion a diabolical chain of events that lead to treachery, deceit and threefold murder. The show that started it all!

A Test for Murder
Dr. Alexander Scofield encounters his friend, retired police captain Waverly Underhill, at a Provincetown art opening. Then they both encounter a murder. The celebrity judge is stabbed in the back upstairs. Downstairs, there are seventy or eighty guests, one of whom must have done it. Captain Underhill takes charge and quickly devises a simple but ingenious test that will force the killer to reveal himself.

The Case Of The Automatic Murders
A premonition of murder leading to violent death...voodoo, seances, automatic writing and psychic messages from the dead are all elements in a strange case that turns criminal. A worried Doctor Scofield calls in his friend, Captain Waverly Underhill, to unravel the mystery.

The Curse Of The Whale’s Tooth
Strange things are happening in the Cape Cod sand dunes. There have been sightings of an unknown creature in the National Seashore, part African lion, part...something else?
Here is the classic Gothic mystery combining a lurking sense of danger in a strongly atmospheric setting, a Hound of the Baskervilles-style case involving the reawakening of an ancient family curse dating back to the whaling days of New Bedford, and a curse foretelling another death about to take place.

Murder from the Bridge
An old man leaps to his death from the Sagamore Bridge spanning the Cape Cod Canal. A clear case of suicide? Perhaps not, once Captain Underhill reads about it in the newspaper. Now, using the same bridge for his own cat and mouse purposes, Captain Underhill takes the killer for a ride...

The Case of the Shooting Star
A meteor explodes in the summertime sky over Cape Cod, and a man is struck dead by a flying fragment. A freak accident, it is supposed, until Captain Underhill and Doctor Scofield, checking into the science and history of meteors, as well as the laws of probability, are led to form a different conclusion.
In 1935, James M. Cain wrote the classic insurance fraud mystery, Double Indemnity. Here’s a story that could be titled Triple Indemnity.

The Golden Idol, the Magwitch and the Donkey’s Tail
Lady Kemp is worried. Her granddaughter, Carmeline, is about to marry Victor Fabloose, a French playboy who may be a gold-digger...or a poisoner.
Captain Waverly Underhill is offered $25,000 to make sure the marriage never takes place. To succeed, he devises a clever scheme involving real buried treasure--a solid-gold statue of a pirate as big as a chocolate Easter bunny. Underhill also borrows a chapter and page out of Charles Dickens while adding an ingenious new wrinkle to a thousand-year-old lie detector test.

The Whereabouts Of Heidi McKnown
Lottery winners Henry and Pamela McKnown have their luck stolen from them when their four-year-old daughter, Heidi, is kidnapped. Years pass without a word and the McKnowns, coping with their grief, are slowly rebuilding their lives.
Then the cycle of terror begins again, as a carnival psychic shows up on Cape Cod, claiming to have made contact with the spirit of the dead child. Though Heidi’s voice comes through in a seance, Underhill is convinced it’s a fake. He enters the case to expose the charlatan and discover the whereabouts of the missing child.

The Junebug Mystery or, "Someone is Out to Kill You, Mr. President"
Captain Underhill and Doctor Scofield recount their very first case.
April, 1961. It is tourist season on Cape Cod… and open season on the President. Having sent its favorite son to the White House, Cape Cod has come under the spell of Camelot. Young police deputy Waverly Underhill meets Doctor Scofield for the very first time, and together they seek to stop an assassination plot that anyone would call crazy: it appears that John Wilkes Booth has returned to kill another President.

The Mystery of Anna Gale
When little Anna Gale Storm is abducted by a stranger in a white van, the police-- and the media -- spring into action. Bulletins are issued. The police swarm. News and police helicopters hover near the twin bridges. Anna Gale’s mother, Betsy Storm, is hysterical but must be questioned. The police are desperate, frustrated by the fact that the only eyewitness is a frightened, easily confused, 5 year old named Jody Higgins.
A parent’s worst nightmare, this story is based in part on a true Cape Cod incident. The locale is Point Isabella, Cotuit, off Old Post Road, where, legend has it, Bluebeard the Pirate buried his girlfriend, Hannah Screechum, after he caught her snooping. Now little Anna Gale Storm, by virtue of her recent kidnapping from the same spot, is in line to take her place alongside Hannah’s. Unless Captain Underhill can get to her in time...

The Whirlpool
Captain Underhill and Doctor Scofield, vacationing up from Cape Cod, encounter more adventure than they sought.
First, they offer a ride to a beautiful park ranger. Then, they're kidnapped by an escaped convict. To top it all off, they are all swept into a harrowing merry-go-round on a busted-loose ferry platform, which is being sucked into the spiral maw of one of Nature's most awesome displays, a monstrous tidal whirlpool fourteen hundred feet across.
Musically rich and with awesome sound effects and a marvelous cast, The Whirlpool features John Stead, OBE as the Announcer, regulars David Ellsworth, Wally O'Hara, Stephen Russell and introducing Jade Rutanen.
This story is based on a real natural phenomenon. Just off the easternmost point of land of the United States is situated a rare natural phenomenon; the Old Sow, one of five large size whirlpools in the world, and the largest 'true' one, meaning one formed from multiple colliding currents. Passamaquoddy Bay is the breeding ground for the Old Sow and her piglets; Eastport, Maine is where you'll find it.

The Queen is in the Counting House
The Boston Red Sox haven't won the World Series since 1918. Zachary Develin, an up-and-coming catcher and hitter, may change all that...but first he's got to survive his first game in Fenway Park. Someone is sending notes to the Sox's general manager, proclaiming in broken verse that if Develin plays in the annual Cape League exhibition game, he will be killed. Luckily for Zack, Captain Underhill is a big baseball fan, and he'll go to any lengths to protect the kid...including suiting up for the game himself.
Counting House is an intriguing 'baseball murder mystery' wherein Captain Underhill not only saves a young ball player's life, but 'reverses the Curse' by removing 'The Curse of the Bambino' from the Red Sox. This program was produced with the full cooperation of the Boston Red Sox, and features the real Fenway Park, the real Fenway organ, and such notables as former and current Red Sox radio announcers, Ken Coleman, and Joe Castiglione.
The late Ken Coleman was a broadcast announcer whose career spaned many decades and included broadcasting Ohio State football games, the Clevelan Indians, the Cleveland Browns, the Boston Red Sox, and many more. He was the author of many sports books and on radio was well known for a variety spot called "Ken's Corner".  He was a gentleman and a person greatly to be missed.

The Case of the Indian Flashlights
For CCRMT's 20th anniversary, we bring you a sequel to our very first Captain Underhill mystery, The Legacy of Euriah Pillar. This one's called The Case of the Indian Flashlights.
The Case of the Indian Flashlights  picks up the trail twenty years later, after the dust has settled and the case nearly forgotten. Euriah Pillar's strongbox, formerly a buried treasure that became a piece of courtroom evidence, now has become a sought-after item for collectors of crime memorabilia. It has fallen into the hands of one such person, a crooked antiques dealer known as Augie Nickleswipe (Stephen Russell) who runs a shop in West Barnstable. A beautiful law student, Roberta Salizar (Christine Rathbun), and a sweet old lady, Mrs. Clattershaw (Bernie MacPherson), also enter the fray. The reluctant-as-usual Doctor Scofield tags along with his friend, the retired police captain, Waverly Underhill, as he cleverly sets snares and unearths clues that lead the detective duo to an ancient tunnel running from a tavern under Route 149 and into the West Barnstable Burial Ground, where lies the crypt of Jabez Howland.
Carol McManus reprises her role as Tishua, the West Indian cook from The Case of the Automatic Murders. Old Tishua delivers the opening monologue, an amalgam of Cape Cod history and mystery, that sets up the tale which spins itself out, answering many questions along the way, including one already implied: Exactly what are 'Indian Flashlights' and how do they end up saving the lives of Captain Underhill and Doctor Scofield?

Don't Touch That Dial
A child's prank has gone horribly wrong. A young boy is trapped inside a cast-iron safe. He's running out of air, and nobody can find the combination. Now, the only person who can save the boy is Captain Waverly Underhill. Listen in real time as Captain Underhill faces an enemy he can't outthink, outwit or outmaneuver...he can only try and find a way to open the door. But will he pull it off in time?
Mark Birmingham has outdone himself with the score to this intense episode.

The Cobra in the Kindergarten
Captain Underhill's always been a charming fellow, but this might be out of his line. When an Egyptian cobra gets loose in an elementary school, it's up to Underhill and Doctor Scofield to track the reptile down before a tragedy occurs. But can Captain Underhill charm an actual snake? And what if it isn't there at all?

Edgar Allan Crow and the Purloined, Purloined Letter
When the Antiques Roadshow  rolls into town, antiques dealer and allegedly reformed con man Augustine Nickleswhite III is on hand. Unfortunately for "Augie Nickleswipe," so is his old enemy, Captain Waverly Underhill. And when identical twins uncover a hoard of Edgar Allan Poe memorabilia, it's a race to see who'll get their hands on it first. Enjoy this double-length episode full of twists and turns, and try and answer the question: Who's conning who?
