Torrent description

This torrent was uploaded from www.TheBox.bz - the home of all British TV

What can I say except that Loudon Wainwright, III is probably the greatest songwriter than 99% of you have never heard of.

Heralded as "the next Bob Dylan" (or one of them, along with Messrs. Forbert, Springsteen and) in the early '70's  Loudon  first tasted fame with that song about the skunk (which isn't on either of these shows, though he will sing it if you ask nicely), but then went on to release more than 20 albums filled with songs that'll make you laugh. Or cry. Or both before the chorus rolls around again. They speak to everyone, but are especially meaningful if you're old enough to have experienced many of the things he sings of: heartbreak, loss, anger, dead parents, growing older, more heartbreak, and all those other things we face in everyday life.

That's not to say it's all doom and gloom, Loudon Wainwright, III is well known for his humor,  having supplied satiric songs for National Public Radio and Nightline in the US, and for Jasper Carrott and a variety of other programs in the UK.  There was also the short run "Loudon & Co" on the BBC.

But people still can't spell his name correctly ---there's even a song about on his "Career Moves" disc called "T.S.M.N.W.A.," they spelled my name wrong again.

Loudon's also an actor of some note. His first big role was on MASH, as the singing Capt. Calvin Spalding, more recently in the films "Knocked Up," "Elizabethtown," "Ally McBeal," and as loser dad Hal Karp in the tv series "Undeclared." '

All that, and far too many people only known him as Rufus' dad. If you're a fan of the younger Wainwright, you're probably familiar with the elder as fodder for a couple of songs including "Dinner at Eight." He also sings his "One Man Guy" on "Poses."  Rufus also served as inspiration for more than a few of Loudon's songs, including, well, I'll let you figure it out...it's on the second of these programs!

Daughter Martha gets in the act, too --- the song "Hitting You" is Loudon's contrite apology for losing his cool with a misbehaving five year old, and she also appears as a duet partner on the more recent "Father/Daughter Dialogue," singing the brilliant line " "Dearest Daddy with your songs/Do you hope to right your wrongs?"

I could go one for dozens more lines about the other singing Wainwrights and extended family members, but let's get back to the matter at hand.
This  two hour music documentary is divided into two parts: "Loudon Wainwright III The BBC Sessions 2005," and " Loudon Wainwright At the BBC."

The first program is in "music and interview" format, and is probably the best place for newcomers to begin.  The crew follows Loudon around on tour as he returns to his former home base of London.

Longtime fans may opt to go directly to the second file, which contains great archival footage from the '70s up to the past couple of years. Oh, and if you're afraid of beards, stay away from this one----there are a couple of scary ones at the very start. Clips in this program come from BBC programs including "The Old Grey Whistle Test," "Words & Music," "The Late Show," "Later with Jools Holland," "Wogan,"  and "Carrott Confidentials, just to name a few.  It is really interesting to watch the almost unrecognizable guy in the early clips morph into the grown up he is today. I say "almost unrecognizable," because even though the voice has deepend,  the unmistakable tongue waggling and foot stomping give it away.

The third file in this pack is a listing of all the songs in each program, and, in the case of the clip show, where they first appeared.

I've got no idea where this comes from ---it was sent to me  in early 2006 by someone who knew I'd interviewed him a couple of times, and thought I'd get a kick out of it.  I hope you will, too!
