This is an excellent documentary series about the development of the English language from the time it first appeared in Britain to the present day.



Part 2 -English goes Underground - deals with the Norman control of Britain, the nobility speaking only French and Latin replacing English in the churches that threatened to extinguish English.  He investigates the significant changes in English over this time.



The program investigates: the replacement of English in courts and churches; the arrival of Chivalry and romance; the gap between French nobility and English peasantry and the differences in languages and topics; the fading of French in nobility; Henry V; the entry of millions of French words into modern English; the shades of meaning provided by similar English and French words; English re-emerging as the dominant language; the Black Death; Chaucer.



Melvyn Bragg is interesting, informative entertaining. He displays his love for the language not just in what he says, but also in the words he chooses to tell the story.
