This popular series ran for eight seasons from 1974 through 1981, it was written by Perry and Croft, who also wrote such greats as Are You Being Served? Dad's Army and Hi De Hi.
The show features a concert party attached to the Royal Artillery depot in Deolali India.
Much like Are You Being Served and Dad's army, it features a broad cast of characters which allows for scope and depth in the stories.
Stereotypes fill all the key roles, the sergeant major is an ignorant and conspiring character who hates the concert party, he is also nicknamed BSM Shut Up by the troops.
The officers are all effete upper class incompetents, yet no matter where they may be they always have their bottles of gin. The troops for their part are scheming, work avoiding and bolshie in the best tradition of their type. The entire cast is managed to perfection by the superb writing of Perry and Croft, although this show takes an episode or two to get comfortable with, it is well worth the effort. About this episode
la di da Gunner Graham is about to be appointed to sergeant, that will mean the end of the concert party and they will all be sent up the jungle, the only way out of this is to slip a "Micky" to Gunner Graham so that he appears to be unsuitable, but that all goes horribly wrong with the "Bearer" as the waiter. The bar scene with the sergeant major and gunner Graham is priceless and one of the great gems of British comedy, a fabulous episode. I will list another dozen or so this weekend and perhaps some more Army Game if anyone is interested.
