SERIES 1 - EPISODE 3

LIVE IN MY HEART AND PAY NO RENT

Quigley is planning to meet up again with a girlfriend he last saw twenty-five years ago. He's been widowed five years, so why should Niamh be upset? After all she has finally agreed to marry Ambrose with or without the trail, and Peter is preparing them for the wedding. As Ambrose leaves St Joseph's, the stone head of a saint falls from the church roof on to his car, missing him, and he sees this as a sign from Heaven.

At Niamh's request, Peter talks to her father about his middle-ages love tryst and Quigley explains he was crazy about Rosarie when they were young, but they split up after he met and fell in love with Niamh's mother. However, before that happened he and Rosarie agreed to meet twenty-five years on, at the top of the mountain where they used to go, to see if they felt the same way about each other.

Ambrose tells Peter he is calling the wedding off because he is going into the priesthood. Peter tries to talk him out of it, but he says the accident was a sign from Heaven because the stone head belonged to St John the Evangelist, patron saint of priests.

When Quigley makes his way to the trysting-place he finds Ambrose there contemplating his destiny. Quigley turfs him out but gets fed up of waiting for his lady love and tells Liam to hold the fort so he can go home and wait in comfort.

Niamh, heartbroken at being jilted, decides to have a 'hardly-a-wedding-reception' anyway at Fitzgerald's. It is obvious that her heart is breaking and Assumpta urges Peter to do something to get Ambrose to see sense - even lie if necessary. And, though it goes against the grain, that is just what he does: tells Ambrose he got it wrong - the head that just missed him was of John the Baptist not the Evangelist - so there was no 'sign'. Ambrose enters the pub and asks Niamh to marry him, cueing great celebrations.

Quigley finally meets up with Rosarie who, after socking him on the jaw for throwing her over all those years ago, spends a pleasant night reminiscing with him on the mountain, before returning to her husband. As they walk back down the mountainside they admire the view.
