TRYING TO CONNECT YOU

Father Peter Clifford, a young priest from Manchester, arrives in Ballykissangel, a small town in Ireland, at the same time as a state-of-the-art confessional box, boasting electronic doors, air conditioning and a fax machine. This has been donated to St Joseph's, the Catholic church in BallyK, by Brian Quigley, local entrepreneur, who hopes it will lead to lucrative orders from other churches. One complication is that it has to be lowered through the church roof.

Peter meets Assumpta Fitzgerald, who runs the local pub/cafe/boarding house. He enjoys her feistiness and, although Peter is disappointed to discover she has no time for the Church, he recognises a kindred spirit.

Quigley's daughter, Niamh, asks Peter's advice: she wants her boyfriend Ambrose, the local Gard, to agree to a trial marriage but he thinks it would be immoral. Later, in the new confessional, Ambrose brings up the problem from his angle and Peter suggests a compromise: they could live together and share everything except sex. Then something emerges from the fax machine: the huge bill for the confessional from the manufacturers in Italy.

At Sunday Mass. Peter publicly decries the high-tech confessional, which upsets Quigley. When the young priest receives another bill on the fax machine 'the Final Demand this time' he forwards the bill on to the Bishop in Cilldargan, the county town and soon Quigley is told to get the confessional out of the church and back to Italy... pronto.

Niahm moves in with Ambrose and Quigley bursts into the confessional to see Peter, believing he has encouraged the unholy arrangement. The door jams and they are both trapped inside.

Assumpta and her best customers, Brendan and Padraig, watch in amusement as the confessional is hoisted through the church roof with Peter and Quigley still inside.
