Quando il giovane Eragon trova una strana pietra blu nel cuore della foresta, non sa ancora che a quel ritrovamento è legato il suo destino e quando scopre che la pietra è in realtà un uovo che schiudendosi rivela il suo singolare contenuto, un cucciolo di drago, il ragazzo si rende conto che nei racconti narrati dal cantastorie Brom c’è qualcosa che lo riguarda fin troppo da vicino e comincia a porsi alcune domande: “...come hanno cominciato i cavalieri, perché sono tenuti in così alta considerazione e da dove vengono i draghi?”.

Costretto dagli eventi ad allontanarsi dalla sua amata valle, Eragon intraprende un viaggio, in compagnia del suo drago e del vecchio cantastorie, durante il quale apprenderà molto su di sé e dovrà dimostrare d'essere degno di meritare ciò che l'incredibile destino gli ha riservato.
