Questo anime, tratto dall'omonimo fumetto, narra la storia di Ranma Saotome, un giovane esperto di arti marziali che, per effetto di una maledizione, si trasforma in una ragazza ogni volta che si bagna con acqua fredda, e torna normale solo se si immerge in acqua calda. Questo a causa di suo padre Genma, maestro della Scuola di Lotta Indiscriminata, che lo porta ad allenarsi nella Valle delle Cento Sorgenti Maledette in Cina (e che finirà a sua volta trasformato in un panda gigante). Come se ciò non bastasse, Genma costringe Ranma a fidanzarsi con Akane Tendo, figlia del suo compagno di studi Soun e anch'essa esperta di arti marziali, nonché dotata di un bel caratterino; in realtà i due legano quasi subito, ma, entrambi troppo orgogliosi e testardi per ammettere i propri sentimenti, preferiscono invece litigare e picchiarsi in continuazione. A questo si aggiungono come al solito dozzine di altri personaggi, all'inizio soprattutto nemici di Ranma e/o pretendenti di Akane, mentre più avanti prevalgono altri sfortunati caduti nelle Sorgenti Maledette.
