Nel 1944, in una località belga liberata dagli americani, un gruppo di musicisti statunitensi diretti dal celebre Lionel Evans sta eseguendo un concerto per la truppa. Improvisamente i Tedeschi attaccano e i musicisti vengono presi prigionieri e condotti in un castello, sede del comando germanico. Poiché da Berlino è stato dato l'ordine di uccidere tutti i prigionieri, lo zelante colonnello Arndt vorrebbe procedere immediatamente all'esecuzuione dei musicisti, ma il generale Schiller, amante della musica e grande ammiratore di Evans, glielo impedisce. Schiller vorrebbe che il direttore e la sua orchestra suonassero per lui... vedetevi il film e saprete come va a finire.
