Il ricco Maxim De Winter conosce in Costa Azzurra una bella e ingenua fanciulla, e in quattro e quattr'otto se la sposa. Primo film hollywoodiano di Hitchcock, un concentrato di suspense ancora con molti echi della vecchia Europa, tradotto per lo schermo da un gotico racconto di Daphne du Maurier. Oscar come miglior film, l'unico vinto da Hitch.
