Frequently Asked Questions

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

What is EmuPack?

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

EmuPack is a collection of emulators for various console game systems and computer platforms. This installer will install icons and file associations for supported emulators included in this package. You can customize your installation of emulators by the filetypes you are looking to support. EmuPack began as a simple installer that gave rom files an icon and then progressed into creating Open With file associations. Since then EmuPack has evolved to include many emulators that support many file associations, start menu folder icons, and updated emulator libraries and components.

What is emulation and rom image files? Isn't it illegal or piracy?

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Emulation is a software program designed to reproduce the hardware inner workings of a console or system and translate it so that it can run on Windows. Roms are files that are digital backup copies of disks, floppies, tapes, cartriges, memory sticks, CD's, DVD's, etc. Piracy is the unauthorized reproduction or sharing of copyrighted media. You are legally entitled to create one single backup copy of these types of media that you have legally purchased. It is illegal to distribute rom files. If you do not own, purchase, or possess original media you are not allowed to keep any rom files that you have or find. You must supply your own roms and are responsible for ownership of those roms. As stated before, EmuPack does not come with any rom images and only comes with the software necessary to load up each console emulator. EmuPack is a no profit project. Its main purpose is for educational purposes and to preserve many historical games from the oblivion they would sink into when the hardware they run on is no longer available. It is not our intention to infringe any copyrights or patents on any original games or consoles.

What makes EmuPack different from M.E.S.S. ?

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

M.E.S.S. stands for Multiple Emulator Super System. M.E.S.S. is a single software solution for emulating a large amount of consoles, computer systems, many handheld devices, and arcade games. EmuPack uses seperate software programs solutions to emulate these different consoles and computer systems. EmuPack focuses on what is now "classic" popular video game consoles and computer systems, it does not include emulators for non-gaming handheld devices, such as calculators. EmuPack does not use a frontend user interface. The idea is that while a frontend is prefferable, it should not be needed to simply run a rom file, or run a certain gaming console. What EmuPack also hopes to see by selecting tested emulators and maintaining up to date software and components is to provide an overall better emulation and gaming experience. Because each seperate emulator is responsible for supporting certain filetypes, it is possible to only install the emulators/filetypes that you need, making EmuPack somewhat scalable.

Emulation Configuration

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Not all emulators are alike. Some run differently or not at all on different hardware and operating systems and therefore may not function as expected. Effort has been made to test the emulators and the components used by them. Some rom files may not open up directly in an emulator, while file associations should cause the emulator to run, it may be necessary to load the file from within the emulator. This would indicate lack of command-line support from the emulator and cannot be fixed. Although some emulators are set to certain default settings it may be necessary to configure some aspects of different emulators for support of joysticks, audio, video, and file/bios settings. Some effort has been made to configure folder path related settings.

Controllers/Joysticks for emulators?

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Most emulators will allow you to map buttons to your keyboard/mouse, some may require it. Most emulators also support regular usb joypads/joysticks. Emulators install with a default configuration and you may need to adjust button configuration to use your joystick, joypad, controllers, keyboard or mouse. On the internet there are several types of accessories that you can purchase that may be used to allow you to use some of your original console controllers.

Emulators require C++/C, SDL, ZLIB or DirectX runtimes?

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Effort has been made to make all emulators usable from installation. Any emulators that do require runtimes come with these runtimes and have already been updated to the latest stable versions. These runtimes do not interfere with any existing installed runtimes as they are not installed to the system directly. DirectX is not supplied with EmuPack and may be necessary to use some emulators. It is assumed that DirectX is already installed and up to date.

Freeware Software

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

This installer and all its software are freeware. DO NOT PAY for EmuPack. While some BIOS files come with EmuPack, rom image files do not. Because EmuPack is freeware, there is no support for any issues that may arise with the use of the installed emulators. While every effort has been taken to ensure the programs run well enough to use with their default configurations, support for emulating roms may be limited. EmuPack is not technically liscensed since it contains freeware made third parties, therefore their software is under General Public License (GPL). Enjoy EmuPack and feel free to distribute it. Another intention of EmuPack is to preserve "classic" gaming.
