In un mondo sotterraneo, dove gli umani non sanno neppure dell'esistenza di una "Superficie", vive Simon, un timido orfano che si procura da vivere scavando con la sua trivella per conto dell'anziano del villaggio. Nel villaggio di Jiiha i giorni scorrono monotoni ed è costante il timore che un terremoto travolga tutti gli abitanti.
