She Wolf is the kind of addictively gimmicky pop that blends incongruous elements into something whose apparent wrongness only adds to its perfection. Subterranean Seventies disco bass, heavy breathing and wolf noises: why did nobody think of it before?





In her quest to extend her appeal from her Spanish language base to global superstardom, there is a sense that Shakira is genuinely trying to invent something original. The 32-year-old’s Latin rhythms, vocal tricks and ear for eccentric hooklines have lifted her out of pop rock homogeneity.





For her follow up to the massive success of 2005’s Oral Fixation she has recruited some of clubland’s most dynamic producers, including Pharrell Williams and Santogold collaborator John Hill. The result is a groovier, more modern and electro-flavoured collection, yet it is Shakira’s weird mash of melodies, multiplicitous vocals and man-eating lyrics that define its character.





The effect is not always pretty, with the ear-clashing quality of being caught between two rooms at a disco, an impression perhaps exaggerated by her heavily mannered vocals. Shakira seems to have at least four different voices (from back-of-the-throat ululation to girlish falsetto) and tracks them against each other then overlays them with percussive interjections, like a one-woman vocal ensemble approaching musical orgasm. For all the poetic oddness of her lyrics, her sexual preoccupations reveal a willingness to pander to pop stereotypes rather than challenge them. But when it comes together, the result can be so inventive and surprising you can hardly believe your ears.
