Protagonista di Tenchi Muyo è Tenchi Masaki, semplice studentello liceale che vive con suo nonno nel tempio di famiglia. Un'antica leggenda narra di un demone imprigionato in una caverna posta proprio sotto il tempio Masaki. Quando Tenchi rompe per caso il sigillo che imprigiona il fantomatico demone, rimane sorpreso nello scoprire che si tratta in realtà di una ragazza (peraltro molto carina). Ryooko, questo il suo nome, furiosa per essere stata rinchiusa per 700 anni, attacca subito il povero Tenchi, ma una volta calmatasi decide di stabilirsi in casa del ragazzo. I guai di Tenchi non sono che appena cominciati, poiché la vicenda continua con rocambolesche avventure e personaggi sempre più strani che si aggiungeranno sempre più numerosi alla famiglia Masaki!
