To help readers experience what a writer is describing, though, I would say
there's nothing better than imagery. A friend of mine who had had a nervous
breakdown tried to write a book about it but was producing only dead
language. Yet this same friend told me that upon her arrival at a famous
mental hospital, she had denied being depressed but told the staff, "I feel
as if I'm standing at the top of a mountain, with a cold wind blowing all
around me." Not a bad way of conveying a sense of isolation,
precariousness, and pain. Unfortunately, in her writing, she seemed to
prefer using abstract words like "isolation," "precariousness," and "pain,"
to using images that would convey these feelings.
