Rosario é una donna messicana emigrata clandestinamente negli Stati Uniti che da quattro anni lavora come domestica a Los Angeles, per mantenere il figlio, Carlitos, e la madre che stanno ancora in Messico. Quando muore la nonna, Carlitos decide di andare via dal Messico, e superare la frontiera chiudendosi nel portabagagli di un auto per raggiungere la madre ad East Los Angeles. Il problema é che Carlitos non sa esattamente dove risiede sua madre, le uniche informazioni che ha, sono nelle descrizioni dell'incrocio stradale dal quale la madre era solita chiamarlo da una cabina telefonica...
