Det äkta paret Olof och Carolina Wrangel hittas mördade på deras magnifika gods. Utredningen visar att kvinnan torterats och våldtagits framför ögonen på sin make innan de tillsammans fick möta döden. En död som måste ha kommit som en befrielse med tanke på den tortyr de båda fått utstå. Till Kurt Wallanders hjälp i utredningen har han sin dotter Linda samt kriminalinspektör Stefan Lindman som båda nu får visa prov på att de är minst lika bra poliser som Kurt.
