Events over the course of one traumatic night in Paris unfold in reverse-chronological order as the beautiful Alex is brutally raped and beaten by a stranger in the underpass. Her boyfriend and ex-lover take matters into their own hands by hiring two criminals to help them find the rapist so that they can exact revenge. A simultaneously beautiful and terrible examination of the destructive nature of cause and effect, and how time destroys everything.





Irréversible utspelar sig i likhet med thrillern Memento (2000) kronologiskt omvänt, första scenen man får se är alltså tidsmässigt den sista. I filmens början får man se rollfiguren Marcus bli utburen på bår av ambulanssjukvårdare ifrån en slags gay-klubb, då är tittaren fortfarande ovetandes om varför han blivit misshandlad. Men detta förklaras allt eftersom filmen skrider framåt, eller egentligen bakåt, då filmen som sagt berättas baklänges.





Filmen har fått mycket och får fortarande extremt mycket kritik för dess oerhört våldsamma innehåll där en man får sitt huvud krossat med en brandsläckare och våldtäcktsscenen på Monica Belluci´s karaktär Alex som pågår i 10 minuter där hela scenen visas.
