Il 20 luglio 1944 a Rastenburg, nella Prussia orientale, Adolf Hitler scampò per un soffio ad un attentato: una bomba esplose nell'edificio dove il Fuherer stava svolgendo la quotidiana riunione con lo Stato Maggiore. L'attentato era parte integrante dell' "Operazione Valchiria " , nome in codice di un colpo di Stato organizzato da un gruppo di ufficiali della Wehrmacht. 

Fu il colonnello Claus Von Stauffenberg a collocare materialmente l'ordigno esplosivo destinato all'uccisione del dittatore, che rimase soltanto ferito. Con Tom Cruise nei panni di Von Stauffenberg, il film "Operazione Valchiria" in questi giorni nelle sale italiane, è lo spunto per rievocare un episodio che avrebbe potuto cambiare il corso della Storia.
