Sinopse:
John (Peter Sarsgaard) e Kate (Vera Farmiga) passam por uma tragédia na família. A perda de um de seus filhos faz com que, embora ainda tenham outros dois - Daniel (Jimmy Bennett) e Joyce (Lorry Ayers) -, resolvam procurar ajuda de um orfanato a fim de adotar mais uma criança. Mesmo depois de alertados das dificuldades de se adotar crianças já crescidas, a aparente maturidade e carisma de Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) os conquista prontamente. A menina, no entanto, mostra-se maléfica, levando toda a família à loucura.
