Begins when an opera ghost terrorizes the cast and crew of the French Opera House while tutoring a chorus girl. He finally drives the lead soprano crazy so she and her friend leave. The girl is able to sing lead one night but the soprano doesn't want her show stolen so she comes back. The ghost demands they keep giving his protégé lead roles. Meanwhile, His pupil falls in love with the Vicomte de Chagny, but the Phantom is in love with Christine, his student. The Phantom is outraged by their love and kidnaps Christine to be his eternal bride. Will Raoul, the Vicomte, be able to stop this dastardly plan?

Christine Daee ha grandi doti canore, ma tutto quello che è riuscita ad ottenere finora è un posto come ballerina di fila al Teatro dell'Opera. Christine ha però dalla sua parte un misterioso 'Angelo della Musica', un compositore sfigurato che vive nei sotterranei del teatro e che spaventa con ogni mezzo cantanti e ballerini della compagnia, convinti che si tratti di un fantasma. L'occasione per Christine arriva quando la primadonna Carlotta abbandona le prove generali. Le viene affidato il ruolo della protagonista e la sera della prima riscuote un enorme successo. Dalla sua esibizione rimane incantato anche il ricco proprietario del teatro, il Visconte de Chagny, che si innamora, ricambiato, di Christine. La relazione amorosa tra i due scatena le ire la feroce gelosia del Fantasma che decide di rapire la bella cantante e di portarla nei sotterranei per tenerla con sé per sempre...
