Richard Beeman - Plain, Honest Men: The Making of the American Constitution

Unabridged Audio Book

Plain, Honest Men is a full-scale account of the deliberations of the Founding Fathers from the opening of the Constitutional Convention on May 25, 1787, to its concluding session on September 17. Following closely the chronology of the convention, the book takes listeners behind the scenes and beyond the debates to show how the world's most important constitution was forged through conflict, compromise, and eventually fragile consensus.

About the Author

Richard R. Beeman is Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania. He is coeditor of Beyond Confederation: The Origins of the American Constitution and National Identity.

From AudioFile

The Constitutional Convention of 1787 was convened to define and unite the loosely bonded states into the federal government we know today. The author takes the appropriate opportunity to digress into the pasts of the most prominent delegates. The largest polemic the convention faced was the issue of slavery. Narrator Michael Prichard can do little to make such a factual account exciting, but, as always, his inflections and ability with words make the story listenable and compelling. Opportunities for characterizations or individual voices don't exist, so he keeps his listeners' attention by uniting all he reads into a smooth narrative. The exhaustive information will whet the appetites of history enthusiasts.
