John Halder (Viggo Mortensen), profesor de literatura en la Alemania de los años 30, es un "buen" (good) y decente ciudadano, con problemas familiares, que poco a poco comienza a sentirse seducido por las ideas nazis del nuevo Führer. Al hilo de sus problemas personales -una mujer neurótica, dos hijos que requieren atención y una madre que sufre demencia senial, Halder publica una novela en la que aboga por la eutanasia compasiva. Su libro es utilizado por varios políticos para apoyar la propaganda gubernamental y, desde ese momento, la carrera de Halder como escritor despega, gracias a una optimista corriente de nacionalismo y prosperidad. Ese cambio de suerte le hace tomar decisiones aparentemente sin importancia, pero cada vez más comprometedoras y que puden tener devastadoras consecuencias para algunas de las personas que le rodean...
