Silvia Dalessandro besluit om zich als vrijwillig arts aan te melden bij een internationale medische organisatie. Ze hoopt uitgezonden te worden naar een Afrikaans oorlogsgebied, maar haar rijke vader probeert daar op allerlei manieren een stokje voor te steken. Nog voor haar vertrek ontmoet ze Matthew Heller en er ontstaat een romance. Matthew is eveneens arts en ze worden beide uitgezonden naar Gambia. Wanneer ze een paar dagen verlof nemen en een uitstapje naar de hoofdstad van Gambia maken, lopen ze in een hinderlaag en de gevolgen zijn dramatisch.

Told in flashback, a successful neurosurgeon (Rob Morrow) is unexpectedly called upon to treat his former fiancee, Silvia, who is dying from a brain tumor. The film then flashes back 15 years to when the couple first met as physicians on an African expedition. Based on the 1997 novel by Erich Segal.
