SINOPSIS: John Halder (Viggo Mortensen), profesor de Literatura en la Alemania de los años 30, publica una novela en la que explora sus circunstancias familiares y defiende la eutanasia. Varios políticos usan el libro para apoyar la propaganda gubernamental, y la carrera de Halder como escritor despega. Pero este cambio de suerte le hace tomar decisiones aparentemente sin importancia, pero con devastadoras consecuencias para las personas que le rodean.
