Un designer, Philippe Dussart, al suo rientro a casa dal lavoro ha la sensazione che qualcuno vi abiti durante la sua assenza. Col passare dei giorni la sensazione aumenta, finché non troverà in salotto il cadavere di un uomo. Qualcuno ha già chiamato la polizia, che è in arrivo. Dussart riesce ad occultare il cadavere e ad evitare il probabile arresto. Chi vuole tutto questo? Una donna dai capelli biondi che, nei giorni precedenti, aveva frequentato il morto proprio nella casa del designer? In realtà la bella Silvia Predal è soltanto vittima di uno tragica storia: suo padre è un ex nazista ricercato in Germania e subisce un ricatto non solo economico; alla fine, così com'era comparsa, la donna sparirà, lasciando al protagonista l'impressione di "aver incontrato un'ombra".
