L'azione si svolge a Créteil, città-satellite di Parigi, in un prossimo futuro. Il giovane Daniel Lucas viene condotto alla ghigliottina, e dall'ultima lettera scritta alla madre apprendiamo che egli è stato condannato a morte per aver ucciso un poliziotto, Albert Janvier. Dai flashback che rievocano il recente passato del giovane emerge la causa del delitto: Daniel l'ha commesso perché glielo ha ordinato la ragazza che amava, Marianne Laforet, forte di un infallibile strumento di persuasione, una terribile droga contenuta in sigarette di una particolare marca, le 'Maréchal'. Al termine della drammatica sequenza, il giovane è giustiziato....
