The collaborative album of Martin Nievera and Gary Valenciano titled As 1 has been certified Gold after two weeks of release in the market. Martin and Gary received their Gold Record award from Universal Records Executive Vice-President Mr. Ramon Chuaying last Sunday (September 13) on ASAP '09.
This rare recording features the two iconic artists singing each other's hit songs as well as the carrier single "As 1," an original song written by Gina Tabuena-Godinez and Albert Chang Co and arranged by Gary Valenciano. "As 1" is a duet featuring Martin and Gary and it is the official theme song of the their upcoming concert.
PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) was able to interview Martin recently and he expressed his excitement for his upcoming concert with Gary. Will viewers be able to see the Concert King dancing onstage with Mr. Pure Energy himself? "Everyone is asking that question. I think if I just keep it a mystery, it might be even more exciting to watch. We'll find out if the old man can still move. But Gary will definitely dance for you. I'm the balladeer."
The two OPM giants will come together in a phenomenal musical event that took almost a quarter of a century to happen. The stage is finally set for the much-awaited "showdown" during their concert dubbed As 1 this Saturday, September 19 (8:00 p.m.) at the Mall of Asia Concert Grounds.
PEP asked Martin if he had a problem with the billing in the concert and he responded by saying, "I have absolutely no problem...as long as my name comes first. To be honest, that's one thing Gary and I have in common, we don't pay it any importance, we don't make it a big deal as far as billing goes...For me, the rule should always be seniority. In the case of Gary and Martin, we started a few months apart."
What did Martin learn about Gary while they rehearsed for this concert? "It's not easy to be Gary V! They keep chekcing your blood and blood sugar. And he's very meticulous about every note, every beat of a song. And me, I'm Mr. Adlib, I'm Mr. Excitement. I love it when I'm not really prepared. I love to see if I can wing it as opposed to Gary V who really has to rehearse. So I'm learning a lot. My pure energy is called adrenaline and it's developed by nerves and fear and stage fright."
It will be recalled that although Martin started his music career earlier than Gary, they both took parallel career paths in music. Both started their recording careers with the same record company (Vicor). They similarly enjoyed hit records one after another receiving recognition and accolades from several award-giving bodies in the field of music and entertainment along the way. They also performed (but not together), in many sold out record-setting concerts both here and abroad. Both are also sought-after product endorsers. And after being in the music industry for over two decades, they continue to enjoy the support of their fans.
