In einer britischen Hafenstadt staunen der junge Detective John Dark und die meisten seiner Kollegen nicht schlecht, als plötzlich eine ebenso brutale und mysteriöse Mordserie ausgerechnet jene örtlichen Gangster und grauen Eminenzen aus dem Verkehr zieht, denen bisher mit legalen Mitteln kaum beizukommen war. Bei näherem Hinsehen entdeckt Dark, dass ausgerechnet ein Freund und Förderer hier mit nachgerade phantastischen Mitteln die Hände bzw. Krallen im Spiel hat, und gerät darob in einen schweren Gewissenskonflikt.
