Im Russlandfeldzug ermorden die Nazis unzählige Juden, 1941 auch die Familien der Gebrüder Bielski. Tuvia (Daniel Craig) und Zus (Liev Schreiber) fliehen in die nahe gelegenen Wälder, wo sie zunächst nur das eigene Überleben in den harten Wintern sichern. Dann schließt sich Zus den Partisanen an und Tuvia errichtet eine Zuflucht für verfolgte Juden, die verzweifelt Hilfe suchen.
