Als er vom Tod seiner Mutter erfährt, bedeutet die Beerdigung für den 58-jährigen Architekten Georg Winter (Josef Bierbichler) nur einen leidigen Pflichttermin. Der Misanthrop fährt mit seiner Frau Eva (Hilde van Mieghem) und den längst erwachsenen Kindern Reh (Sandra Hüller) und Jan (Matthias Schweighöfer) von Hamburg in sein Tiroler Heimatdorf. Die Begegnung mit Jugendfreunden konfrontiert ihn mit Lebenslügen, das Testament enthüllt Peinliches.
